Bryan "Badger" Goss (born Bryan Winston Goss, Sturminster Newton, Dorset, 1940) [1] [2] was a successful motocross rider (also known as a scrambler) in the 1960s and 1970s.
He won both individual legs of the Trophée des Nations (now Motocross des Nations) held at Brands Hatch in 1966, beating top riders Joël Robert, Torsten Hallman and teammate Dave Bickers. The Trophy event, won on points by Sweden, comprised two legs, each lasting 40 minutes, and was contested by five-man teams from ten countries. [3] Goss went on to win the British Championship in 1970 as well as various other major motocross victories. [4]
After experimenting with rolling his bicycle down local farmers' fields, Goss started racing on grass tracks at age 16 in 1957, riding a 197 cc LCS (Lew Coffin Special) until breaking a leg during a meeting in Exeter in 1958. [5] After a one-year absence from competition, Goss returned riding a 197 cc Greeves Hawkstone provided by the factory distributor for the West Country of England, Triss Sharp. Good results secured a factory Cotton for 1960. [5]
Goss stayed with Cotton for three years, working as a lorry driver and in a cattle-feed business during the week, also working briefly at the Cotton factory in Gloucester until he won a race on a rival DOT machine. After losing his job, Goss again rode for Cotton until securing factory machines again with Greeves for 1963 and 1964. [5]
Living in Yetminster, Dorset, in 1964 he started his own company selling motocross bikes and accessories at Yeovil, the nearest big town just across the county boundary in Somerset. [4] [5]
When interviewed by Motor Cycle in 1966, Goss confirmed no-one knew the origins of the nickname 'Badger' he'd had since a youngster, but it was expected to be for life, and he had a stuffed Badger's head above the shop-counter.
During 1965 Goss rode for Cotton and a used a private Husqvarna, [3] purchased from Jeff Smith, until 1966 when he signed for Greeves. With the regular major overhauls being carried out by his factory backers, Goss' brother Tony helped with transportation and preparation. [5]
Goss carried on racing but business commitments took over while importing Maico motorcycles.[ citation needed ] The business continues in Yeovil with Bryan's son at the helm, [6] [7] and with his young grandchildren beginning to compete in motocross competitions.

Joël Robert was a Belgian professional motocross racer. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 1960 to 1976 when the sport experienced a surge in popularity worldwide. A six-time world champion, Robert dominated the 250cc class for almost a decade when, he placed either first or second every year between 1964 and 1972 including, five consecutive world championships. He won a total of 50 Grand Prix races over his career, a record which stood for nearly 30 years.
Roger De Coster is a Belgian former professional motocross racer and current Motorsport Director of KTM and Husqvarna North America. De Coster's name is almost synonymous with the sport of motocross, winning five Motocross World Championships during the 1970s and tallying a record 36 500cc Grand Prix victories. His stature is such in the sport of motocross that he is often simply referred to as "The Man." As a team manager, he captained the first American team to win the Motocross des Nations in 1981. De Coster was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999. The motorcycling publication Cycle News named him Motocrosser of the Century in 2000. In 2010, he was named an FIM Legend for his motorcycling achievements.
Heikki Antero Mikkola is a Finnish former professional motocross racer. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 1969 to 1979. Mikkola is notable for being a four-time FIM motocross world champion. In 2006 he was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. In 2015, Mikkola was named an FIM Legend for his motorcycle racing achievements.
Brad Lackey is an American former professional motocross racer. He competed in the AMA Motocross Championships from 1970 to 1972 and, in the Motocross World Championships from 1973 to 1982. Lackey was notable for becoming the first and only American to win the 500cc motocross world championship in 1982. Nicknamed "Bad Brad", Lackey was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999 and, in 2013 he was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.
The Cotton Motor Company, was a British motorcycle manufacturer of 11a Bristol Road, Gloucester, and was founded by Frank Willoughby Cotton in 1918. F.W. presided over the company until his retirement in 1953. The company was reconstituted as E. Cotton (Motorcycles) Ltd, and traded until 1980. The marque was later resurrected in the late 1990s by a business which manufactured replicas of earlier machines.
Paul Smart is an English successful former short circuit motorcycle road racer who later entered Grands Prix.
Greeves Motorcycles was a British motorcycle manufacturer founded by Bert Greeves which produced a range of road machines, and later competition mounts for observed trials, scrambles and road racing. The original company produced motorcycles from 1952, funded by a contract with the Ministry of Pensions for their Invacar, a three-wheeler for disabled drivers.
Kent Howerton is an American former professional motocross racer. He competed in the AMA Motocross Championships from 1973 to 1988. Howerton is notable for being a three-time motocross national champion.
Åke Jonsson is a Swedish former professional motocross racer. He was one of the top riders in the Motocross World Championships during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Jonsson came close to winning the world championship title in 1968, 1970 and in 1971 when he led the championship going into the final round when, a mechanical failure ruined his bid.
Bengt Edvin Åberg was a Swedish professional motocross racer. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 1966 to 1979. He was a two-time FIM 500cc Motocross World Champion.
Rolf Tibblin is a Swedish former professional motocross racer. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 1957 to 1967. Tibblin was a three-time motocross world champion known for his exceptional physical fitness.
Håkan Andersson is a Swedish former professional motocross racer. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 1966 to 1979. Andersson won the F.I.M. 250cc Motocross World Championship in 1973.
Bill Nilsson was a Swedish professional motocross racer. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 1957 to 1967. Nilsson was the first 500 cc motocross world champion after winning the inaugural 1957 championship sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme.
Les Archer was an English former leading motorcycle racer of the 1950s, competing in long-distance speed trials, road racing and scrambles, now known as motocross. He was the son of Les Archer, also a top motorcycle racer from the 1920s. Archer is notable for winning the 1956 F.I.M. 500cc European Motocross Championship on a highly modified Manx Norton.
David Geoffrey Bickers was an English Grand Prix motocross racer from Coddenham, Suffolk. He won two European motocross championships, and was a member of British motocross teams that won two Motocross des Nations events as well as two Trophée des Nations events. Bickers was awarded the Motorcycle News 'Man of the Year' award in 1960.
Gautier Paulin is a French former professional motocross racer. He has competed in the Motocross World Championships since 2007. Paulin was a member of the French team that won five consecutive Motocross des Nations events between 2014 and 2018.
The 1974 FIM Motocross World Championship was the 18th FIM Motocross Racing World Championship season.
Christer Hammargren is a Swedish former professional motocross racer. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 1967 to 1976.
The 1974 AMA Motocross Championship season was the 3rd AMA Motocross National Championship season.
